Keepers Match Play 2015-Final Results
The Keepers Match Play for 2015 was a scrum to the finish with Mike “Coach” Fisher prevailing over Herbie “The Driving Machine” Kushner in the final match 3 & 2 on the North Course. Fisher has been a match play force to be reckoned with as he won this event last year over Billy Burak and this establishes the first Two-Peat in history in the Keepers Match Play.
The Final Fore matched Fisher against Marc “Security Clearance” Birnbaum on one side of the bracket and Kushner against Rich “Kojak” Greenberg in the other semi-final. Both matches were hotly contested but Fisher and Kushner prevailed and would face off in the final.
In the final match blows were exchanged early until Mike birdied the fourth hole to take a 2-up advantage. Herbie got it back to 1-down on the fifth but Mike asserted himself again winning the seventh with a par and the eighth with another birdie to make the turn at 3-up. Undaunted Herbie found some light early in the back nine to close to within two, but pars by Fisher on 13 and 14 put Kushner in the full bother and the match was closed out when Mike made a big par putt on the Par 3 sixteenth to win the match 3 & 2.
In the post game interview with the Kommish Herbie said, “Mike played really well (77 gross on his ball) and I was not as sharp as in earlier matches. But if he misses that putt on 16 I am two-down with two to play and, as you know, that is not unfamiliar territory for me.” Smarting from the memory of that first hand experience in the round of eight loss to Herbie, the Mishner had nothing to do but shake his head knowingly.
This year’s Keepers Match Play was a fiesty kompetition throughout the Play-Ins and all six rounds. Many matches went extra holes and in the end we had a fine kadre of Keepers in the final money.
