Keepers Rules Education Initiative

Posted on Updated on

USGA and R and A Rules logoAs part of the Keepers Seven Kampaign we are running a year-long initiative to educate the full Woodmont membership in the rules of the game and their responsibility in shepherding fair competitions in all Woodmont and Keepers events.

Under the guidance of the trusted rules consulting firm of Friedson, Zweig, and Dweck a library of circumstantial rules have been compiled in a colorful and readable format. We will be introducing a rule a week to all participants in golf events at the club through the season.

USGA Rules of Golf BookFlyers will be distributed at the events and posted at solemn matriculation stations throughout the club. The Double-D Staff will support these with brief Q & A conversations of these rules and reminders of the player’s responsibility to protect the field and implement correct rules adherence within their foursomes.

The process begins at Opening Day with a brief overview of:

Signing and Attesting A Scorecard

The rule of the week flyers will be emailed to our members and be posted on this website for your reference under the link to your right called Keepers Rules Education.

The hope is that recognition of the proper implementation of the rules will become part of the fabric of all golf competitions at Woodmont.  All who play will benefit from knowledge of these rules and the sense of fair play in “protecting the field” by policing all participants respect for the Rules of Golf.

Keepers Kontributions

Click to go to the Woodmont Site to sign up for the eventOur community support has to start at home and The Keepers once again made an annual contribution to the Woodmont Employees Assitance Fund. This fund was created a number of years ago to provide emergency assistance for Woodmont employees who face financial needs because of a family crisis. The fund is supported in large part by contributions of the employees themselves through self directed deductions from their regular paychecks. It continues to grow because of their generosity and the generosity of Woodmont members who support the program with a pledges of their own.  This is just a small way our members can thank those who serve their needs every day.

The Keepers are very proud of the fact that we were a founding contributor to this fund in it’s first year and have matched that contribution in each subsequent year.  The fund has grown and provides employees with a bit of help when they need it most.

Marines Helping Marines LogoThrough annual contributions The Keepers have made to military charities we have been able to support those brave men and women who protect our freedom and way of life.  The contribution we make to the Marines Helping Marines of Maryland is one of those opportunities.  This organization supports the treatment and recuperation of injured U.S. Marines at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, Walter Reed Army Hospital, and other military hospitals across the country. Contributions enable the program to provide TVs/CD players in patient rooms, airline tickets and travel money to family members, monthly cookouts on hospital grounds for the walking wounded, family members, and staff, and support, and other support services to recovering service men and women.

Through our year long Folds of Honor/SMGA Players Pool competitions The Keepers raise money for these two veteran’s organizations.  The Folds of Honor Foundation program awards post secondary scholarships to spouses and children of military personal who lost their lives serving their country.  SMGA and the Wounded Warriors provide golf equipment, instruction, practice time, and on course opportunities to vets and their families in the Washington Metropolitan area.

In addition, The Keepers spearhead the Second Time Around Program at Woodmont which collects used golf clubs, golf bags, and golf balls from our members and directs them to the Army Rehab Program at Fort Belvoir.  As part of their rehab services for returning personnel from active military theaters this program provides golf instruction and playing opportunities to help injured veterans rediscover a life of normal back home.  We have sent hundreds of sets of clubs and tens of thousands of golf balls over the last four years to help this program prosper.

Supporting worthy causes like these is part of the core mission of The Keepers.  We are happy to be in a position to help them in their efforts to serve those in our community.

Par Three Tournament

The third playing of the almost annual Woodmont Par Three Tournament will be held on Sunday April 27th.  This engaging competition is open to men and women of all handicap abilities.

Given the 4-Person Scramble format the sheer challenge is mollified slightly by the fact that your result does not have to count on each shot.  A scramble handicap increment will be in play for each group so well under par is the expected winning score of the day.

As was the case last year,  this is a challenging array of 18 Par 3 holes-the creative work of D & D Design Associates.   The holes range from 86 to 160 yards with most under 120 yards, so everyone can have a chance to contribute to their team’s success

Keepers Pro-Schmo Results

Posted on Updated on

The Keepers season got off to a rip roaring start today with our annual Masters Weekend Keepers Pro-Schmo.Masters Logo  Thirty-six guys teamed up with seven of the pros who shot the best rounds in Friday’s second round at Augusta.  The Virtual Pro Partners included Bubba (68), Thomas Bjorn (68), John Senden (68), Jim Furyk (68), Lucas Glover (69), Gonzalo Fdez Castrano (69), and Brandon Grace (69).

Each Keeper played a virtual Best Ball with the pro they picked out of The Keepers Kap, Thomas Bjorn was clearly the desired pick with his 8 birdies in yesterday’s round. But as you will see the winners in the event had a cross section of help from their ghost pros.

The winners in today’s top prize in Keepers Kup Points and Keepers Kash Sweeps were  Steve “Country Doc” Keller/Brandon Grace and Rich “Kojak” Greenberg/G. Fdez Castrano with net 61 on the South Zoysia.  Five pairings tied for third place with net 62.  They were Neal Bobys/Lucas Glover, Chet Levine/Thomas Bjorn, Arnie Miller/Brandon Grace, Jimmy Polsky/Thomas Bjorn,  and Rob “New Boy On The Block” Shesser/John Senden.

Without the help of any ghost pros the winners in this kompetition were:

1st- Steve Keller with 22 points

T-2nd Rich Greenberg and Rick Brecher with 20 points

3rd- Arnie Miller with 19 points

There were a Keepers Slew of guys at 17 points (7 guys) who will be replaying a few missed downhill three-footers in their minds tonight.

Keepers Kollection 2014

Posted on Updated on

The Spring 2014 Keepers Wear and Accessories have arrived in time for the season opening Pro-Schmo this Saturday.  Keepers and Gavel

The Keepers Fashion Subcommittee scanned the entire PGA Merchandise Show in January just to find items worthy of being part of this year’s kollection.   In celebration of Keepers Seven, our seventh year in the kamaraderie business, we have elevated the Keepers Gavel to a position of appropriate recognition, sporting it on our Keepers Hat and Towel this year.  No, it is not an elementary school recorder, the Olympic Torch, or a paint brush….it is The Keepers Gavel spawned from a cathartic experience of one of our weighty members at the first Keepers Last Supper in 2008.

Included this year are all cotton long sleeve sweatshirts, vests, and golf shirts from Martin Sportswear.  Presented in a soft and soothing island periwinkle these should work as well at Joe’s Stone Crab Happy Hour as stalking the fifth fairway on the North.   As always, The Keepers will look resplendent in this year’s selections.

The first event of Keepers Seven is the Keepers Pro-Schmo on Saturday April 12th.

Tee times are from 8:30 to 10:00 am and all Keepers play with 90% of their handicap.

Keepers picks out of the Keepers Kap their pro partner’s score from Friday’s round at Augusta. The Pro’s hole-by-hole score is posted to par on the course we are playing and they play a virtual best ball between the Pro Partner’s gross score and the Keeper Schmo’s net score on each hole.

In last year’s tightly kontested event 30 guys played with the likes of Steve Stricker, Brandt Snedeker, Angel Cabrera, Jason Day, John Senden, and Rory McIlroy. Arnie Miller and Rory teamed up with a fine 11-under par 61 on the South Course to win 300 Keepers Points and $100 in Kash Sweeps.  Jim-Jim Polsky and Steve Stricker took second with 62.   The teams of Tom Burne Notice/Rory McIlroy and P.C. Cohen/Jason Day were third at 63.
